Thackeray’s café at the Charterhouse

[+] More

ABDA Creative Design & Build are extremely proud to have completed works at the Charterhouse café, “Thackeray’s at the Charterhouse”, situated within the grounds of the historic Charterhouse site in London, which dates back the fourteenth century.

Having worked on a number of prestigious restaurant, arts and heritage projects, ABDA were appointed to design the café and prep kitchen in December 2016.

The café followed the completion of the new Museum and Learning centre, which was finalised in 2016 as part of their ‘Revealing the Charterhouse’ project, and the development was officially opened by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at the end of February 2017.

The café provides a unique experience to museum visitors, as well as catering for businesses in the adjoining office building and visitors to the newly planted Square and gardens.

For ABDA, it was essential that their design and build team were sympathetic to the Grade II listed building features, and with the assistance of structural engineers and a historian, they were able to overcome unique challenges throughout the project. Thanks to key manufacturing and distributor partners such as Creative Edge, CED Fabrications, Winterhalter, RH Hall, Electrolux, Protocol Furniture, Lightique Lighting, Williams Refrigeration and Mechline, ABDA have provided the Charterhouse and its visitors with a high quality food and beverage space.

David Phillips, Bursar of The Charterhouse has said:

The Royal opening of the Museum was a great event in the life of this charity for the care of the elderly. We expect visitors to both enjoy their experience and appreciate that their visit is helping to support our work. The café will also be part of this. Author William Thackeray was a pupil at the School which was part of the site at one time. ABDA’s design and implementation of the project was sympathetic to the Georgian building in which it is situated, and has greatly improved the space it occupies. We found ABDA a good company to work with – everything from the inception of the project to design to completion was carried out promptly and to a high standard.

And Jeremy Smith, ABDA Project Manager has commented:

It has been a huge privilege to work with the Charterhouse. We worked closely with our client and their appointed structural engineers and historian to ensure that the architectural features of this listed building were preserved throughout the project.  This led to a smooth handover, and we hope that the café museum will be enjoyed by visitors for years to come.
