School Restaurant Refurbishment: Duke of York Military School

[+] More

The school restaurant refurbishment was part of a larger expansion plan which would see student numbers increase by 200. In order to accommodate the rise in numbers we were asked to increase the capacity of the restaurant and redesign the servery area to speed up service times.

To meet the requirements of the brief we firstly had to open out the existing servery space by knocking through 3 walls, including part of the old clock tower. As the whole site is listed, correct planning consents had to be obtained.

The client wanted to bring the area up to date so we took influences from both the high street and the local area such as the sea and the dock yard to give the restaurant a subtle industrial feel.

Counters are manufactured with solid marble tops and the facades boarded with rough sawn timber planks with burnished steel strappings.

There is a stunning central light feature in the form of a 1400 mm diameter bespoke chandelier which hangs from the 15 metre tall clock tower.
