The Charterhouse Café
Charterhouse is a stunning, historical Grade 1 listed establishment dating back to the fourteenth century. It’s a building which had previously been used in multiple ways including being a private home, boarding school and now a charitable trust. Following the opening of a new museum and learning centre, we were approached to help create a café and kitchen in an adjacent Georgian building. The café is popular not just with visitors to the attraction but is also now a destination place for residents and those working in the local area.
Our design involved looking at the features of both the Charterhouse and existing building so we could maintain some of the Georgian architecture. We created a homely feel with an artisan offering focusing on a soft and contemporary décor. Throughout the project the joinery remained respectful of the Georgian heritage with the panelling and counter fronts. ABDA loves working on arts and heritage projects like this and works alongside clients to help overcome issues that listed building sometimes bring.
